How to choose
Charcoal does not expire but it absorbs moisture, and damp charcoal is hard to light and burns cool. Store it sealed and off a concrete floor, because concrete wicks damp upwards even when it looks dry. Wood stores want the opposite: airflow on all sides and a roof, not a sealed box, or the logs sweat and rot.
Utensil storage matters more than it sounds. Tools left out corrode, tools kept indoors never make it to the grill, and the practical answer is a weatherproof caddy that lives next to the cooker.
