Jealous Devil is the best lump charcoal overall: quebracho is one of the densest hardwoods there is, so it burns hotter and longer than commodity lump with very little ash. Royal Oak is the sensible value pick, and Rockwood is the one to reach for on long cooks.

Jealous Devil All Natural Hardwood Lump
Quebracho is one of the densest hardwoods on earth, which is the whole story. It burns hotter and longer than the softer woods in commodity lump, sparks very little, and leaves remarkably little ash. The trade is price and a mild, neutral smoke, so pair it with wood chunks if you want a strong smoke profile.
Fogo Super Premium Hardwood Lump
Sorted so the bag is almost entirely large fist-sized chunks, which matters more than people expect: big pieces stack with air gaps, burn predictably and do not fall through the grate. Lights fast and runs hot. You pay for the sorting, and bags contain fewer pieces than the weight suggests because large chunks pack loosely.
Royal Oak 100% All Natural Hardwood Lump
The sensible default. Widely stocked, honestly made, and a good sweet hardwood smoke. Piece size varies a lot within a bag, from large chunks to dust, so expect to sort as you load and expect some waste at the bottom. For everyday grilling the price per cook is hard to beat.
Rockwood All Natural Lump
Favoured in kamado circles because it burns steadily rather than aggressively, which is what you want across a twelve hour cook. Consistent piece size, very little dust, and a clean smell from the moment it lights, with none of the acrid start-up some cheaper lump has. Distribution is patchier than the big brands.
Cowboy All Natural Hardwood Lump
Cheap and available almost everywhere, which counts for something on a Saturday afternoon. Quality is inconsistent bag to bag, piece size swings wildly, and you will find the occasional scrap of milled timber. Fine for hot fast grilling where you are burning through it anyway; not what you want under a twelve hour brisket.
