Compressed hardwood briquettes, cheap and widely stocked, fine for everyday grilling where you are burning through them anyway.
Pillow-shaped hardwood briquettes made with starch rather than petroleum binders, a long clean burn and low ash. Weber's own quantities assume this fuel.
Dense hexagonal briquettes with a hole through the middle for airflow, a very long even burn favoured for restaurant-style grilling.

Hardwood briquettes are pressed from pure hardwood char with no coal dust or petroleum binders, so they burn cleaner than standard briquettes while keeping the uniform shape that makes briquettes predictable. They are the sensible middle ground between commodity briquettes and lump.
Expect a longer, steadier burn than lump and a cleaner smell than cheap briquettes, at a price between the two. For long, temperature-controlled cooks where you still want good flavour, they are an excellent default.
